Assume They Always Come for You

Assume They Always Come for You

Anything is better
Than feeling listless and alone

Or beating up oneself for a job
Lost through no fault of their own

For me it’s layoff number five
After 52 yrs alive and two businesses blown

Tell me what is it I’m missing
about these tycoons who deign to kiss the throne?

It’s not for lack of trying
Or not kowtowing to the order of the day

No matter what I do or wear
There are words I’ll never say

Made a bunch of cogent arguments
Tried to do things the right way

Couldn’t change things from inside
They saw me coming from a mile away

So when they come,
Assume they always come for you

Never give more than is asked
Stay on task and hold on tight to what is true

Know the line that you won’t cross
Has a price so know its cost so it don’t surprise you

I’m with you on the other side
Make them rue the day they ever thought to mess with you

No one's ever accountable
for the wreckage of a slow authoritarian coup

They'll shift some algorithm again
Before another round of cuts begins

So when they come,
Assume they always come for you

Never give more than is asked
Stay on task and hold on tight to what is true

Know the line that you won’t cross
Has a price so know its cost so it don’t surprise you

Backing track, still under construction
